Hundreds of protesters protesting the government’s failure to deliver promised jobs in the energy sector demanded their spokesman in Tataouine, a city in southern Tunisia, be released on Tuesday after two days of clashes with security forces.

“If we had worked here, why would young people spend their money on boats to Europe?” one protester said to AXADLE. “There is no real work.”

Tataouine’s field represents 40 percent of national gas and oil production, but local authorities say the region is not benefiting from the sector.
