“Several people were injured and taken to hospital emergency,” explained to AFP spokesman firefighters Hudu Abdul Wasiu. “Twenty-nine died on the spot while five others died in the hospital”.

Police and firefighters said the accident occurred early Tuesday in the town of Dompoase, about 200 kilometers from the capital, Accra.

The victims are 20 men, 11 women and three children, one of whom was only one year old. Forty survivors are treated at the hospital.

There have been nearly 14,000 road accidents in Ghana last year, resulting in 2,284 deaths and 14,397 injuries, according to official statistics.

They are mainly due to poor roads, often unlit, and faulty traffic lights.
