President Museveni serves as vice chairman of operations
That was the end, on Friday, July 30, of the 42-day prison sentence that was decided in mid-June to counter the new wave of Covid-19 cases in the country. After severe restrictions, President Yoweri Museveni partially reopened the country’s operations.
In 42 days, Uganda has gone from 1,500 daily cases in mid-June to an average of between 200 and 400 Covid-19 cases per day this week. Results that encouraged the president to partially reopen the country.
“Before inclusion,” said Yoweri Museveni, “on average 22% of the tests were positive daily, but now, today, we are on average 8 positive people out of 100 people tested every day.”
Motorcycle taxis are now allowed again, as well as inter-district travel, shopping malls, food markets and outdoor sports events. The curfew is now between 7pm and 5.30pm to prevent a new outbreak of Covid-19 cases.
1.14 million Ugandans vaccinated only “Today we are partially resuming operations, the President continues: public transport, travel can be resumed. But if we do not respect social distance, we will have a problem, a societal problem. By sticking to these measures, we can avoid a third wave, and we may have time to get the vaccines, and maybe even the treatment for Covid-19. ”
To date, only about 1.14 million Ugandans have received at least a first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine. Immunization has been slowed by the global vaccine shortage; but new deliveries of AstraZeneca and Sinovac are expected this Saturday by the Ugandan authorities.
