The information was first reported by state television with this message accompanied by clips of patriotic songs and rebroadcast: “It was a failed coup attempt, the people have to face it.” During the trial, Mohamed al-Faki Suleiman, spokesman for the Sovereignty Council, the body governing the transition, issued a reassuring statement: “Everything is under control and the revolution is winning.”

According to a member of this council, the putschists – armored units in the Sudanese army – tried on Tuesday morning to take control of several bridges connecting Khartoum and Omdurman, in order to take local media in the state. This axis between the capital and its twin city, located on the other side of the Nile, is known to be strategic. At the end of the morning, access to the bridge remained blocked.

The last of these armored units would have surrendered by the end of the morning. Khartoum therefore accuses relatives by former President Omar al-Bashir to stand behind this attempt and announce the arrests of “officers”, but also of “civilians”, according to Information Minister Hamza Baloul. “The leaders of the failed plot” have been arrested, he assures.

The presidency of the Sudanese Council of Ministers explains that he already had information about this coup attempt on Monday, which would have enabled him to counter it. A meeting with security forces is currently underway in Khartoum. The Sudanese authorities have already lamented several attempts to overthrow since the revolution, all attributed to supporters of the old regime.

In a television address, Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok said the act was instigated by people some of whom belonged to army personnel, which led to arrests. He assured that this coup attempt would not hinder the transition to democracy in Sudan.
