Libya’s eastern-based House of Representatives has established a five-member committee to communicate with the electoral commission and observe upcoming elections, a report said on Tuesday.
House of Representatives spokesman Abdullah Bulaihaq said the commission will seek to determine the problems facing the electoral process in the country, Anadolu (AA) agency reported. He noted that the committee is expected to present its report, prepared by the five-member committee, before the December 14 parliamentary session.
Some 70 pro-coup deputies, General Khalifa Haftar, had asked to question election officials on suspicion of fraud and concerns.
As time is running out, the House of Representatives and the High Council of State have yet to agree to determine the legal framework for presidential and legislative elections in the country.
On September 8, Aguila Saleh, speaker of the Tobruk-based House of Representatives, who is also a political ally of warlord Haftar, unilaterally announced that he had enacted a law on presidential elections on September 8.
The High Council of State rejected the law, which had allowed Haftar to stand at the polls. Haftar’s dual nationality and military role stood in the way of the candidacy criteria.
The House of Representatives announced on October 4 with another unilaterally enacted law that parliamentary elections would take place a month after the presidential elections.
The candidacy process for candidates for the Libyan presidential elections ended on December 7, the electoral commission said on Tuesday.
While the number of final requests has yet to be determined, an official told AA he doesn’t expect it to exceed 5,000 and that it will take three days to finalize them.
