In Angola, several humanitarian organizations are sounding the alarm. Nearly six million people are on the verge of being depleted due to food shortages in the south of the country, a region affected by the worst drought in forty years, according to the World Food Program (WFP). Cunene and Huila provinces are most affected.
According to local NGOs, nearly 7,000 people, driven by hunger, have crossed the border into Namibia in recent months.
Food security due to drought but also due to political decisions, condemns these organizations. Since the end of the civil war twenty years ago, the Angolan state has been trying to develop livestock farming in the region. He allocated these fertile municipal lands to commercial pastoralists, thus leaving these traditional communities poor.
Lack of resources For Domingos Fingo, head of the Communities in construction association, the government has not taken the measures the seriousness of the situation: “We lacked the resources to deal with this situation. How is that possible? So we, what we want is for the Angolan state to declare a state of emergency to come to the aid of local communities that are experiencing an absolutely catastrophic reality. “
With several local organizations, they traveled to Luanda, the capital, to meet with the authorities. They demand that the state recognize its responsibility and declare a state of emergency.
