An assassination attempt was directed on Tuesday morning, July 20, 2021, at Assimi Goïta, the colonel who has now become interim president. A narrow foiled knife attack at the Grand Mosque in Bamako, while attending Eid al-Adha, the victim’s feast.

According to witnesses, two young people then stood up before going against the president for the transition.

One of the young people had a knife, the other a weapon in his hand. The person with the knife tried to stab President Goïta. The latter took steps to defend himself and law enforcement – the National Guard and the police – invaded the mosque to ensure his protection before he could evacuate him.

Witnesses claim to have seen blood on a boubou, a sign that a person was therefore probably injured, but the interim president Assimi Goïta is safe and sound, according to his entourage. The two youths, the attackers, were arrested.

Everything is fine, there are no worries. When you are a leader, there are always unhappy people. It is an isolated act.
