What future for Guinea? Uncertainty hangs over the junta

Last week’s military coup in Guinea saw President Alpha Condé arrested and detained. Colonel Mamady Doumbouya has established himself as the face of the new military leaders. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres blasted the seizure of power at gunpoint. Neighboring states followed his example, adding their condemnation. Then followed the West African economic group Ecowas and the African Union.

Colonel Doumbouya announced that there would be a government of national unity and a rapid transition to democratic governance. More than a week later begins the process towards this goal.
