Mogadishu, Monday 29 November 2021 – On Sunday, the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) provided logistical support to the Somali Police Force (SPF), to help strengthen and improve security at polling stations during the ongoing elections.

The objects, which mainly consist of construction materials, including sheet metal, nails, timber, plywood and Hesco bags, donated by the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), will be used to build and strengthen defense barriers around polling stations in the Banadir region, which includes Mogadishu, to secure the voting exercise from any disruption.

The items were handed over in Mogadishu by AMISOM Police’s Election Security Adviser, Assistant Police Commissioner (ACP) Anthony Placid, to SPF’s Deputy Commander of the Banadir Region, Lieutenant Colonel Said Ali Mohamud.

ACP Placid noted that items will help facilitate a smooth election process by increasing security at polling stations across the country and regions, where similar support is provided.

“AMISOM has provided the logistical support provided by UNSOS to the Somali police, and the exercise is ongoing at the same time in Barawe and Kismayo. These field defense support materials and other non-lethal election security objects will go a long way in strengthening security architecture, ”, In ACP Placid.

For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Mohamud praised UNSOS and AMISOM for the good cooperation with SPF, and added that the donated items would be of good use for electoral security.

“We are pleased to receive from UNSOS and AMISOM Police these items intended for electoral security. We have worked with them to secure the ongoing election; the items they have donated, including previous donations are crucial. They have also promised to donate more items in the coming days, and we thank them for their continued support and cooperation, says Lieutenant Colonel Mohamud.

Recently, AMISOM handed over to SPF other roll safety materials, including hand-held metal detectors and high-caliber torches for night patrols. More support is expected to follow.

Somalia has just completed the upper house election, paving the way for the start of the lower house election, which will culminate in the presidential election.

The task of the Somali police force is to secure the elections, where the AMISOM police play a supportive role, which makes the purchase and delivery of election security materials to SPF across the country a key product.

Present at the handover were SPF Election Security Focal Person, Major Abdifatah Moalim Dahir, UNSOS Mission Support Center Plans Officers Barry Braimah and Captain Ross Somerville; Mogadishu Logistics Base (MLB) Operations and Yard Manager Alain Pierre Rwuri; MLB chief Svein Axelson, and AMISOM police election security adviser for the Banadir region, deputy chief of police Abass Sheriff Kamara.
