Debretsion Gebremichael: We have changed our strategy, Tigray will win

ADDIS ABABA – Tigray Regional President Debretsion Gebremichael says the Tigray Defense Forces [TDF] have changed strategy and will prevail in the long term in the ongoing war with the Ethiopian National Defense Forces [ENDF].

Already Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has left the front line after two weeks of intensive fighting that saw TDF back down as he seeks solutions, possibly counterattacks, that could be catastrophic in the long run.

Tigrayan spokesman Getachew Reda made this point in a Tweet when he said: “Speaking of stories of courage, perseverance and heroism, a unit of the Tigray army has traveled over 158 km on foot in two days a fatal blow to several thousand enemy contingents. Now that’s news. “

Tigray President Debretsion Gebremichael said in a statement that:

“We assessed the overall situation, ours as well as that of the enemy, and made the decision for ourselves. “We have to turn around; we should not continue in the present [course]; we have to do additional tasks, additional adjustments’ – it is after identifying this that we came to the decision, “he noted.

“It was a difficult decision but one that had to be made. We have to understand that it was a correct decision…[The decision] was not done because of diplomatic pressure or discussions. We do not engage in discussions that the people of Tigray are not aware of or diplomatic activities that the people of Tigray have not accepted… It is a time of fierce struggle. “

Already the Tigray Defense Forces have withdrawn – they have not been defeated on the battlefield or routed. Anyone looking at their long supply lines would have seen that they were vulnerable to attack. The withdrawal was hardly surprising.

Prime Minister Abiy issued a statement declaring that this is the “first chapter accompanied by victory”. This is by no means the first time that he has claimed victory.

In November last year, Prime Minister Abiy said the conflict had been “successfully concluded”.

In reality, the Tigrayan fighters had retreated into the hills and mountains and waged a fierce guerrilla campaign against invading Ethiopian, Amhara and Eritrean troops.

It was not until April 2021 for the Prime Minister to admit that heavy fighting was taking place on no less than eight fronts. Then in June 2021, the Tigrayan troops were able to retake Mekelle, in jubilation.

The war could last for some time after the two sides refused to agree to declare a ceasefire, under pressure from the international community, which has yet to bear fruit. Several people have died in the current war with millions displaced as TDF and ENDF continue to clash.
