New airstrike in Ethiopia kills 56 people in IDP camp

ADDIS ABABA – An airstrike in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia left 56 dead and at least 30 injured in a camp for internally displaced people, two aid workers said.

The two aid workers, who requested anonymity, said the death toll had been confirmed by local authorities.

Aid workers also sent Reuters photos they had taken of injured in hospital, including many children.

Military spokesman Col. Getnet Adane and government spokesman Legesse Tulu did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The government has previously denied targeting civilians in the 14-month conflict with Tigrayan forces.

The strike hit the camp in the northwestern town of Dedebit, near the border with Eritrea, aid workers said.
