NISA urges report on detention of jailed ex-Al-Shabaab spokesman

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The National Intelligence Security Agency [NISA] was invited to submit a report on the arrest and subsequent detention of Mukhtar Robow, a former senior member of Al-Shabaab in the Federal Republic of Somalia.

Home Secretary Abdullahi Nor asked acting NISA chief Abdullahi Farey to submit a full report on the detention of Mukhtar Robow, who served as al-Shabaab deputy before resigning to join politics in the country.

In a letter, the minister said he had received contacts from relatives and officials concerned about Robow’s safety and well-being. This is the first time that a senior government official has openly questioned Mukhtar Robow’s detention.

Robow was first arrested in 2018 after declaring his candidacy for the presidential seat in the Southwest. He would not be allowed to appear in a poll after incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo backed Abdiaziz Lafta-Gareen.

Chaos erupted in Baidoa, the regional administrative capital of the Southwest, as angry residents protested his ouster from the poll. At least 11 people have been shot dead by security forces following an unprecedented clash.

Since then, Robow has remained in custody under NISA supervision. To this day, the government has never spoken openly about its plight. However, he is believed to be still in custody.

In October of this year, Robow spoke to the media where he accused the government of plotting to kill him. However, the government did not say whether there were plans to eliminate the former deputy chief of al-Shabaab.
