Somali leaders called on to defuse rising tensions in capital

MOGADISHU, Somalia – International partners said they were following with deep concern the current situation and political developments in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Monday.

The political tension emerged after outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo issued a statement on Sunday evening announcing he was suspending the prime minister’s powers over corruption allegations.

Foreign diplomats in Mogadishu called on Somali leaders to prioritize the interests of the country, defuse growing political tensions and refrain from any provocation or use of force that could undermine peace and stability.

“We strongly urge the Somali leadership to take immediate action to defuse tensions in Mogadishu, to refrain from provocative acts and to avoid violence,” the United States Embassy in Mogadishu said in an article on Twitter.

International partners have repeatedly expressed their growing concern about procedural irregularities and delays in the Somali electoral process which was due to end this year.

In a joint statement, they said it was imperative that the agreements of September 17, 2020 and May 27, 2021, which form the basis of the elections, be implemented immediately without further distraction or disruption.

Partners stressed the need to hold the in-person consultative meeting of the National Advisory Board as soon as possible to speed up the long-delayed electoral process.

The United States said it remains committed to supporting peace and stability in Somalia and will use whatever tools are available to achieve those goals.
