Somali opposition candidates slam lower house elections

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The union of the presidential candidates of the Federal Republic of Somalia has once again shaken up the current lower house elections, which have created tension and confusion in the young democracy which is still grappling with instability.

In a detailed statement, opposition candidates said Somalia’s federal government and federal member states had no interest in holding free and fair elections, which significantly delayed the cause of political lawlessness. .

The union questioned why the two entities had not suspended the lower house elections and allowed for a more inclusive exercise that brings together all entities. Last week, the candidates questioned the electoral process in the country.

The candidates announced technical and security committees to organize an inclusive conference where outstanding issues will be exhausted before the elections. The exercise was ideally to end last month after weeks of deliberation.

It is not clear whether the committee will work closely with the federal government and member states that are mandated to work on the elections. Two weeks ago, the candidates announced that the opposition had withdrawn from the race.

For months, stakeholders pressed for a more inclusive process, even threatening to withdraw sponsorship from the exercise. Most Western countries and the United Nations supported the electoral process.

The opposition accused incumbent President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo of rigging the lower house elections in his favor to help him win the presidential election. Members of the Lower House and Senators participate in the presidential elections.

Members of the union include former Presidents Shariff Sheikh Ahmed and Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud, former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire and party leader Wadajir Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame.
