Somalia: opposition candidates reject Qoorqoor’s dinner invitation

MOGADISHU, Somalia – A host of Somali opposition presidential candidates rejected an invitation to a dinner hosted by a close ally of outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, further demonstrating the divisions in the country, which has been grappling with decades of instability .

Reports collected by Axadleindicate that the Union of Presidential Candidates [UPC] skipped a dinner invitation from Ahmed Kariye aka Qoorqoor, the current regional president of Galmadug and a close associate of Farmaajo.

Qoorqoor arrived in Mogadishu on Tuesday in an effort to calm the growing political stalemate between Farmaajo and Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble. The two fell out for the second time in less than six months.

Somali political experts often claim that Farmaajo uses President Galmudug Qoorqoor to calm tensions and quell political pressure. The Galmudug leader has yet to respond to Prime Minister Mohamed Roble’s call for election talks with FMS leaders aimed at resolving the current quagmire.

Roble, who is fully responsible for implementing the electoral deal, had called all FMS leaders to a meeting, but unfortunately Farmaajo sparked another debate by claiming he suspended Roble, a move that has since been rejected.

The Prime Minister, who enjoys the support of members of the opposition and some Member States, has pledged to continue to exercise his responsibilities. The United States also insisted on Tuesday that it recognize him as Somalia’s de facto prime minister.

Earlier Tuesday, opposition presidential candidates in Somalia accused Farmaajo of committing “betrayal” for Roble’s “suspension” which they called an “attempted coup”. Opposition candidates called on Farmaajo to leave the presidential palace “as soon as possible”.

Somalia is expected to hold presidential elections after the lower house elections are over, in which a new president will be elected. Farmaajo has been accused of delaying the electoral exercise by undermining Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble.
