Stop Escalating Rhetoric and Support Prime Minister Roble, US Says Farmaajo

MOGADISHU, Somalia – The United States has once again issued a warning to outgoing President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo, which could further complicate his role as President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, which is grappling with instability.

For the past week, Farmaajo has been at odds with Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble over the upcoming elections in Somalia, leading to a bitter battle for control of the entire electoral exercise and security in the country.

And in another warning, Assistant Secretary of State Molly Phee called on President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to stop rhetoric and escalating actions, arguing that the president’s move could plunge the country into unprecedented chaos.

In addition, the Secretary of State for African Affairs noted that Farmaajo, who is under pressure to step down, should consider supporting Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to conclude elections which have been delayed in the country.

“I spoke today with Somali President Farmaajo about the urgent need to stop the rhetoric and escalating actions. I stressed that the security forces must remain neutral. I urged him to support the Prime Minister Mohamed Roble in the convening of the NCC and the rapid realization of credible elections, “the statement read.

His statement comes just a day after Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta to discuss the unfortunate events in Somalia. Blinken further said the United States was once again tempted to overthrow Prime Minister Roble by President Farmaajo.

Molly Phee had previously spoken with Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to whom they were discussing, among other things, the need to hold a meeting of the National Advisory Council to settle the electoral exercise which has dragged on for months.

“I spoke yesterday with Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Roble to underscore our support for his efforts to organize a CNC meeting to correct electoral irregularities and to quickly conclude credible elections. All parties must end the escalation actions and the security forces must remain neutral, ”she noted.

Farmaajo and Prime Minister Roble are fighting to control security and elections in the country, resulting in the current political unrest. Despite pressure from a number of stakeholders, President Farmaajo has remained silent on the current political impasse.
