Turkey gives drones to Somalia as Ankara faces criticism over military role

MOGADISHU, Somalia – Turkey has donated sophisticated military equipment to the Federal Republic of Somalia, a country that has struggled for stability over the past four decades and the most recent rise in the insurgency.

The drones had been delivered earlier this month to the country and would be used by the Somali National Army [SNA] in the fight against Al-Shabaab militants, who pose the greatest threat to the Horn of Africa country.

In recent years, Turkey has armed and trained the Somali Army at Camp TurkSom – its sprawling military base and defense university – in recent years, providing G3 assault rifles and armored vehicles.

Turkey trains and equips the Gorgor elite of the SNA and the Haramcad police officers at a large military base in Mogadishu and in his country.

Somali soldiers trained by Turkey have been fighting al-Shabaab militants for years. Yet a political crisis in Somalia has raised concerns among international partners that the Somali army is embroiled in local conflicts.

The Somali opposition accused Turkey of sending weapons to Somalia, which Farmajo used to silence press freedom and attack critics as well as demolish federal states.
