Eleven weeks after the president’s coup, the composition of the cabinet was validated by Kaïs Saïed, who signed the appointment decree. The new members swore in during a ceremony at Carthage Palace and will be broadcast live.
as reported from Tunis, Amira Souilem
Directed by Najla Bouden-Romdhane, the new government team has 25 members, of which nine are women. Among them is Samir Saïd, a former worker in the banking sector who inherits from the Ministry of Economy, a position with significant contributions in a crisis country.
Large-scale portfolios have been entrusted to the president’s relatives. This is the case with lawyer Taoufik Charfeddine appointed to the interior. A position he had already held for a few months between 2020 and 2021, before he was fired by Hichem Mechichi, the former head of government a time of open war with the president.
The same scenario for Leïla Jaffel, former Minister, was also rejected by the former Prime Minister. This judge, who has the confidence of Kaïs Saïed, is taking over as head of the Ministry of Justice.
A team that, in addition to the head of government, a trained geologist, includes other academics. This is the case with the Minister of Defense, technology, health but also youth and sports.
The Tunisian president’s predilection for academics therefore seems to be true today. A trend that makes some Tunisians say that their Council of Ministers should now look like a class council.
