Ajax make an official strategy for Tottenham’s Steven Bergwijn

Dutch giants Ajax have contacted Tottenham about the possibility of taking winger Steven Bergwijn back to their home country in the new year.

The 24-year-old was the first signing of the José Mourinho era in January 2020, although he has struggled to adapt to English football and make an impact on the first team – only scoring four goals and giving nine assists in 62 games so far.

Bergwijn has barely been involved since Antonio Conte took the reins at Spurs in November following the dismissal of Nuno Espirito Santos, and with the January transfer window approaching, the out-of-favored striker has been linked with a loan spell from north London with a number of clubs circling.

One of these sites is Ajax, and the Dutch publication De Telegraaf now reports that they have made their interest known to Tottenham.

The Amsterdam club – which ended the Champions League group stage with a 100% record by beating Sporting CP on Tuesday night – would make room in the squad by selling the Brazilian winger David Neres.

Speaking of a potential move for Bergwijn last week, Conte said he would “evaluate” the suitability of the Dutch international.

“We’re talking about a player who has important skills,” he said. “It was a pity for me but not for the national team that he scored a goal [during the November international break]. I would have liked to have had him during the international break of two weeks to get to know him much better.

“But he has good quality – he is fantastic one-on-one, very fast, good quality to beat the man and score goals.

“Now we work, he understands what I want from him. For me he is one of the three strikers, he can play in every third position for the strikers.

“He is a player that I have to make an important evaluation but he is in our squad and I count on him. [Against Brentford on Thursday] he is ready and available. He had a problem against Mura and otherwise he should have played, but tomorrow he will be available. “

Bergwijn spent five years in Ajax’s youth squad before moving to PSV Eindhoven when he was 13. Ajax had wanted to sign him before joining Spurs 2020, but PSV refused to sell to a direct rival.
