Canada national team Alistair Johnston has completed its trade from Nashville SC to CF Montreal.
The 23-year-old right-back enjoyed a strong campaign in 2021 and played 28 times for Nashville in all competitions while earning 18 caps for CanMNT – Johnston was also previously qualified for the Northern Ireland national team.
After a couple of weeks of speculation, Johnston has completed a move back to his home country, where Montreal paid $ 1 million in General Allocation Money (GAM) for his services. Nashville also retains a 10% sale clause starting at $ 1 million if Johnston is transferred again in the future.
“We are delighted to welcome this young Canadian who had a strong desire to join the club,” CF Montreal sports director Olivier Renard said in a press release from the club on Monday.
“In addition to his footballing qualities, Alistair has shown exemplary thinking with the Canadian national team. He is a versatile defender who can play both as a right-back and part of a three-man defense. We will continue to work closely with him to promote his development. We are happy over welcoming him to the team. “
Nashville General Manager Mike Jacobs said: “We want to thank Alistair for his contribution to our organization, and we wish him success in the next step of his journey with Montreal.”

Although $ 1 million is a significant amount of GAM, Nashville will reduce its work to replace Johnston’s production over their back line.
Can act as a right back, wingback or defensive winger, the Vancouver-born defender offered great versatility. No Nashville player made more tackles than Johnston (49) during the 2021 MLS season, while at the other end of the field he was second for successful crosses into the box (13).
