Antonio Conte has admitted that he will need signings in the transfer market in January to improve the quality of the Tottenham squad.
Spurs’ prospects have improved with Conte’s arrival and are five points from the Champions League qualifiers, but as evidenced by the disappointing Europa Conference League losses against Vitesse Arnham and Mura, the depth of the squad is suspect.
Speaking ahead of Tottenham clash with Watford on Saturday, Conte said: “After just two weeks, I said we needed to improve the quality of this squad and that we definitely have to do it. I was sure of that after seven to ten days and then I had to make an evaluation of who I can trust and who I can not. “
The Italian also provided various insights into the future of Tanguy Ndombele and Harry Winks.
Ndombele, the club’s record signing, has been used sparingly in recent months, while the Winks have forced themselves back into the starting eleven with some good performances against Liverpool and Southampton.
Asked about Ndombele’s role in the squad, Conte said bluntly: “He is a midfielder.
“But I repeat before to talk about the transfer market, it is better for me and the club to talk together and then we will have the situation clearer than now. Talking about players now if they can come or go is not right and it is not honestly.”
About Winks, he added: “Winksy plays well. Winsky proved to be a really good player. For this reason, Winks will stay here. I find out which players are reliable and I can trust them. Winksy showed me that I can trust him.”
Spurs can reduce the gap at fourth-placed Arsenal to two points if Manchester City beat the Gunners and they then beat Watford later on Saturday.
