From Tottenham Hotspur Stadium – Antonio Conte refused to be drawn on Tanguy Ndombele’s future after the midfielder booed out of the fans in Spurs’ 3-1 FA Cup victory against Morecambe.
Three late goals ensured that Tottenham avoided a disruption in the hands of the League One team, with Harry Kane and Lucas Moura inspiring the hosts to victory as replacements.
Conte turned to his bench with 20 minutes left and his team still one goal below, choosing to take out Dele Alli, Bryan Gil and Ndombele.
The French midfielder was the first to be officially subsidized, but was the last to leave the pitch after slowly stepping off the pitch, which annoyed Spurs fans, who booed him loudly as he went straight down the tunnel.
Speaking to the media after the match, Conte did not publicly announce Tottenham’s record signing and did not give much away when asked if Ndombele still has a future at the club.
“Honestly, I was so focused on the match because we lost 1-0,” said Conte. “I think this kind of situation, they [the players] is in football. You have to be good at trying to change your mind if someone is disappointed in you.
“It’s normal. I was a player and it happened to me sometimes when someone was unhappy with my performance. But this is our life. I repeat, it’s okay. We have to keep working and try to get better next time.
“We have to know very well that if you perform well, the fans are happy. When you do not perform well, the fans are not happy. This is football. If we think the fans must be happy every time, whether you win or lose, “I think it’s not right. I’m sure, when I’m not winning I’m not happy. I’m a little upset when this happens and I think it’s okay.”
Conte later revealed that he had not yet spoken to the players – including Ndombele – after the match and had therefore not discussed the incident in the locker room.
