Antonio Conte has described how he plans to bring a “winning mentality” to Tottenham.
The Italian’s appointment as head coach on Tuesday coincided with the 5,000th day since Spurs last won a trophy – the 2008 League Cup.
It was hoped that Jose Mourinho would take that mentality with him when he became Tottenham’s head coach in 2019, but could not do so, and Conte has now revealed how his players can change their mindset to end the trophy drought.
“Sure, [mentality] we must work to improve. It is not easy because you have to work every day, you have to breathe a winning mentality every day, he said.
“You do not invent this, it is impossible to invent and pay for, it does not cost money for a winning mentality.
“You have to get the right people to bring this into the club. You have to breathe it every day, you have to start every day with this kind of mentality. You have to start thinking about football for many hours of your life, to improve. you your desire to win.
“You have to start thinking” okay, I want to win but I know it means I have to sacrifice, suffer, work very hard. “If you start thinking this way, it means you want to be a winner. Otherwise, you will continue to stay at a medium level.
“When I talk about [needing] time I involve all these situations and aspects. When you want to be a winner, win something in your life, it means you have to start thinking that to reach a top goal – win a trophy, win a league, win a Champions League, win the Europa League, win the Europa Conference League, win Carling Cup – you need to know that most of your life you have to devote yourself to football.
“It means you want to improve your level. I think we at Tottenham need to improve the team’s level if we want to achieve any goals in the present and the future. I think this is the key.
“We need to start thinking about football more and more and more.”
