The winner would take fifth place in the 90-minute ranking of the top five midfielders in the world in 2021 – after Raphael Varane, Ruben Dias, Giorgio Chiellini and number one Virgil van Dijk.

It ended with an incredibly close battle between two Chelsea teammates – Rudiger and Silva. But after more than 7,200 votes, the German emerged victorious by the smallest margin.

Rudiger took 36.7% of the fan votes to Silva’s 33.7%, while Alaba and Ramos had 16.2% and 13.4% respectively.

The 28-year-old deserves the right to take his place among 90mins’ five best midfielders in the world in 2021, a reward for a fantastic 12 months at club level that has seen his reputation improve exponentially after previously being seen as something of a responsibility.

Now known for his looting forwards, Rudiger has shone in Thomas Tuchel’s third since January, playing a key role when Chelsea lifted the Champions League trophy in May – a triumph that gave him some serious points in the # W2WC poll.

In 46 games, he made the second most tackles of any of our top five with 58, played his part in 28 clean sheets and scored three goals at the other end.

This is the first time Rudiger among the five best midfielders in W2WC has failed to even make the shortlist 2020.
