Arsenal are prepared to spend a lot of money during the transfer window in January to give manager Mikel Arteta the boost he is looking for in the hunt for a top four spot.
After a miserable start to the season, Arsenal have had a fantastic form that has taken them up to four in the Premier League table, although they could end up behind rivals Tottenham if Antonio Conte’s team wins one of their two matches in hand.
It is clear that Arteta wants a new midfielder and striker as soon as possible to try and ensure that they can maintain their position, and The Guardian expects him to get the kind of backing he is looking for.
Arsenal are ready to release a lot of money to Arteta, but it will be difficult to find the right goals in the January window, as the players are notoriously harder to sign. At the top, they have chased Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic, whose interest in moving to the Emirates is not as strong as Arsenal’s desire to sign him.
If someone like Vlahovic could be recruited this month, Arteta said: “I think with the amount of things, and how we want to develop the squad, we have to maximize each window in many different ways and we are paying attention.
“Edu [the sporting director] and his team works very hard, because we know exactly what we need to do. Whether we can achieve it in January or summer is another matter because it is related to other things.
“If it’s the right player and we can afford it, and we can do what we want to do, we will discuss it and make the best possible decision. We are open.”
While Arteta hopes to land a new striker soon, he prioritises a move for a midfielder, with Ainsley Maitland-Niles imminent departure to Roma, leaving them some cards in the heart of the pitch.
“We will move and look for alternatives because we are very short there,” Arteta said of her midfield search.
However, the manager ruled out the possibility of recruiting Jack Wilshere again, who has trained with Arsenal in recent weeks while trying to regain his fitness and find a new club.
“I think I was very clear about the situation with Jack and the role he would have to be here and we continue in the same way,” Arteta emphasized.
