Arsenal confirm that Martin Odegaard has tested positive for Covid-19

Arsenal have confirmed that Martin Odegaard has tested positive for Covid-19, which excludes him from their Carabao Cup semi-final first match with Liverpool on Thursday night.

The Norwegian has not been mentioned in the squad, with Bukayo Saka, Alexandre Lacazette, Gabriel Martinelli and Eddie Nketiah taking the attacking places.

The Gunners confirmed the news with their XI post before the match and it seems extremely unlikely that Odegaard will be available to face Tottenham in the north London derby on Sunday afternoon. Sead Kolasinac is also ruled out with a tight hamstring, although he is a winger and was unlikely to start before Kieran Tierney.

Arsenal are already short-staffed in midfield, with Emile Smith Rowe also not included in Thursday’s match day squad. Thomas Partey is in the service of the Africa Cup of Nations, while Ainsley Maitland-Niles recently left Roma on loan until the end of the season.

Granit Xhaka and Albert Sambi Lokonga take the central midfield places on Thursday when the Gunners look to take revenge on a Liverpool team that has often beaten them in recent years, especially at Anfield.

They lost last season’s Premier League matches with an overall score of 7-0. However, their latest success against the Reds came in the Carabao Cup last semester, and won on penalties after a goalless draw at Merseyside.

As for Liverpool, they are without Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, so Diogo Jota and Takumi Minamino start together with Roberto Firmino in attack. Alisson has also come in and replaced the regular cup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher.
