Arsenal vs Wolves postponed due to positive Covid-19 tests

Arsenal’s Premier League match against Wolves, which was originally scheduled for Tuesday, December 28, has been postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak in the latter ranks.

It will be the latest in a long line of top matches lost against Covid-19 over Christmas, and it will now need to be rearranged.

The Wolves’ Boxing Day meeting with Watford was postponed earlier this week and their trip to the Emirates Stadium would always be questionable. On the second day, the setting of the Arsenal match was finally confirmed.

“Wolves’ trip to Arsenal on Tuesday 28 December has been postponed, with Bruno Lage having an insufficient number of players available to fulfill the match,” read a statement from the Midlands club.

“A combination of positive Covid-19 test results and injuries led Wolves to request that the match be postponed, which was accepted early on to give supporters a two-day notice period.”

The Premier League added in its own statement: “Arsenal FC’s match against Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium, which will be played at 12:30 on Tuesday 28 December, has unfortunately been postponed.

The Premier League board accepted the application for suspension as Wolverhampton Wanderers did not have the required number of players available for the match (13 outfielders and a goalkeeper) as a result of a number of Covid-19 cases and injuries at the club.

“The board was able to make its decision before the match to provide clarity to the affected clubs and their fans. We apologize for the inconvenience and disruption to the supporters’ party plans.”

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta can be happy with the rest, with his team initially having only a day’s rest between their festive matches against Norwich and Wolves. But he can also be frustrated to see his side’s momentum dampened by an interruption in the action because they are in fantastic shape.
