Ben Chilwell has revealed that he has undergone a successful operation on his knee and is ready for the long road back to full fitness.
Chilwell suffered a partial cruciate ligament tear against Juventus at the end of November and initially stayed away from the operating table, with club doctors wanting to give him time to recover naturally before making a final decision.
The left-back has made some progress in the last month but it was eventually decided that he needed surgery, which means that Chilwell’s season is almost certainly over and that he is now facing a race against time to get back to the start of the 2022/23 campaign.
“Just wanted to let everyone know that yesterday’s operation was successful,” he wrote on Twitter. “I feel very positive and motivated to work as a beast to soon get back on the field with my boys and help this fantastic club win more trophies.
“Thank you all for the support and nice messages.”
With Chilwell set for a longer period on the sidelines, Chelsea are looking at ways to replace him. Currently, Marcos Alonso is the only senior left-back in the books.
Lyon have blocked Chelsea’s attempt to recall Emerson Palmieri, and the French side are refusing to give up their option to buy him at the end of the season.

As a result, the Blues are expected to dive into the transfer market and 90min understand that Everton’s Lucas Digne is their main goal.
While Chelsea are prepared to sign Digne on a permanent basis, they are reluctant to tie too much money to the deal and would prefer to loan him if an agreement with Everton can be reached.
