Ben Chilwell will undergo ACL surgery and will miss the rest of the season

Ben Chilwell is expected to miss the rest of the season after Chelsea decided he would undergo surgery on his injured anterior cruciate ligament.

The English left-back suffered the injury in the 4-0 victory over Juventus in November and has not played since, although at one stage it was thought that he was on his way back to full fitness and could even be available as soon as possible. as of January.

Goal has, however, confirmed that the Blues have decided to end their current rehabilitation process to perform surgery instead. Chilwell will need most of 2022 to recover, which means his return may come later in the year at the earliest.

It’s a blow for Thomas Tuchel, leaving the Chelsea coach with only Marcos Alonso as his specialist left-back at Stamford Bridge. Saul Niguez, Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi have been used in that position, but it is not the favored position for any of the trio.

Chilwell’s long absence could cause Chelsea to dive into the January market for a new left-back, and 90min understands that Everton’s Lucas Digne is such a candidate for a move.

The French national team player has ended up in conflict with Rafa Benitez at Goodison Park and is expected to leave the club in the winter market.

Chilwell has been a major goal threat for Chelsea this season, scoring three goals and contributing another assist in just six Premier League appearances. With Digne, they would recruit another left-back with similar attacking qualities.

The former Barcelona defender is known for his cross-ability from wide areas, with 14 assists in the league during the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons.

In Digne’s absence – he has not played since the 4-1 loss to Liverpool in early December – midfielder Ben Godfrey has replaced Toffees on the left.
