Atlanta United has strengthened its goalkeeping options with the signing of Bobby Shuttleworth via free agency.
Five Stripes have been looking for an experienced stopper to back Brad Guzan after Alec Kann left for FC Cincinnati earlier this winter.
Shuttleworth arrives at Mercedes-Benz Stadium with more than a decade of MLS experience under his belt and 227 regular season games to date. The 34-year-old had spent the last few years with Chicago Fire but lost his first place to teenage sensation Gabriel Slonina at the end of last season and did not renew his contract.
The veteran goalkeeper has signed a contract with Atlanta United until the 2022 season, with a club option for 2023.
“Bobby is a veteran goalkeeper with many years of MLS experience and we are excited to add him to our playlist,” said Atlanta United Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegra in a press release. “He adds experience and competition to our goalkeeping team.”
Shuttleworth is the latest arrival during a hectic off-season for Atlanta United, who have also recruited goalkeeper colleague Dylan Castanheira and midfielder Osvaldo Alonso via free agency. They also picked up Erik Centeno, Tristan Trager, Daniel Bloyou and Tola Showunmi in the MLS SuperDraft recently. Right-back Ronald Hernandez is expected to complete a permanent move soon.
Together with Kann, the likes of Franco Escobar, Anton Walkes and Mo Adams have left the club. Atlanta United will also need to move a designated player to allow the singing of Argentine sensation Thiago Almada – Ezequiel Barco is currently linked with a move to Brazilian Internacional.
Gonzalo Pineda’s men open their 2022 campaign at home against Sporting Kansas City on February 27 before traveling to Colorado Rapids.
