Bruno Fernandes lost Michael Carrick for Man Utd clash with Villarreal

Manchester United’s caretaker Michael Carrick has made some bold choice decisions for his first match as manager, with Bruno Fernandes releasing to the bench for his team’s crucial Champions League match against Villarreal.

Carrick is currently temporarily responsible for the Red Devils after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s farewell on Sunday morning.

The last nail in the coffin for Solskjaer was a 4-1 loss to Watford which left United in eighth place in the Premier League table. Prior to that, his side had suffered serious losses against Leicester City, Liverpool and Man City.

Things have not gone much better in Europe either. When they enter match day five, United are at the top of Group F, but their opponent tonight, Villarreal, have the same points with them in second place, while Atalanta are only two behind in third place.

In his pre-match press conference, Carrick had ruled out some drastic changes to the side, but he has made a surprising call in midfield and released the ever-present Fernandes to the bench.

In his place, Donny van de Beek – who Solskjaer rarely started – got a place in the starting eleven.

In another interesting move, Anthony Martial and Jadon Sancho, who have both been peripherals of this campaign, have been selected. Marcus Rashford must at the same time be content with a place on the bench.

Cristiano Ronaldo, however, retains his place at the front, while Alex Telles is left-back as Luke Shaw continued to recover from a concussion.
