Burnley vs Leicester postponed due to Covid-19

The Premier League has confirmed that Saturday’s scheduled meeting between Burnley and Leicester has been postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak at Turf Moor.

Leicester have not played a league match since December 28, when they beat Liverpool 1-0, with the recent matches against Norwich and Everton both declined.

This time it is a Covid-19 outburst in Burnley that has forced a postponement of the game, where the Premier League confirms that Sean Dyche’s team does not have the minimum number of players needed for the game.

“The Premier League board accepted Burnley’s application because the club does not have the required number of players available for the match (13 outfielders and a goalkeeper), due to cases of covid-19 and injuries,” it said in a statement.

“The board was able to make its decision before the match to provide clarity to the affected clubs and their fans.

“We apologize for the inconvenience and disruption caused by supporters who planned to participate in the match, and we are aware that launches will disappoint fans.”

Burnley were hit by the outbreak in the run-up to their defeat in the third round of the FA Cup against Huddersfield Town, for which manager Dyche also isolated himself.

The Clarets named just seven substitutes out of nine possible, of whom only three were actually senior players, and they battled two late goals to end their cup competition at the earliest stage.

In addition to the Covid-19 case, Burnley has also handled the absence of Maxwel Cornet, who is away in the African Cup of Nations, while Ashley Barnes and Johann Berg Gudmundsson have both been injured.

Burnley are also down in the attacking division after selling Chris Wood to Newcastle United.
