Carlo Ancelotti believes there are no favorites to win the Champions League

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has insisted his team have the quality to win La Liga, but only to compete in the Champions League this season.

Los Blancos secured the top spot in Group D on Tuesday night with an impressive 2-0 victory at home against Inter, which prevented the Nerazzurri from taking over them in the standings.

Real are also strong on the domestic front and lead La Liga by eight points from nearest challenger Sevilla, even though they have played one match more than Julen Lopetegui’s side.

After his triumph over Inter at the Santiago Bernabeu, Ancelotti was optimistic about Real’s prospects for the rest of the season – but insisted that no side is the favorite to win the European Cup this year.

“We are doing well. We are at a high level right now and we are playing with greater defensive solidity,” he said via Marca. “Sometimes we do not push so hard but we feel good, we are comfortable. We do not want to defend an open match. Sometimes it is not so aesthetic, but we feel very good.

“We have the quality to win La Liga and the quality to compete in the Champions League. There are no teams with quality to win the Champions League, just to compete. There are more intense teams, others with more quality. We are not intense in the defensive aspect. “We do not like to defend an open match. But we have a lot of quality, a lot of experience and a lot of commitment.”

Earlier on Tuesday, Juventus boss Massimiliano Allegri named Real as one of the five favorites to win this year’s Champions League, although Ancelotti clearly does not agree.

Real will be joined in the knockout phase of the Champions League by city rivals Atletico, but Barcelona and Sevilla could be knocked out of the competition if they do not secure wins on Wednesday night.

Barça are likely in need of all three points from their trip to Bayern Munich to advance, while Sevilla require a victory away against Salzburg to secure their place in the quarter-finals.
