Carlo Ancelotti responds to Dani Ceballo’s furious change reaction

Carlo Ancelotti has admitted that his decision to postpone Dani Ceballo’s replacement in Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over Alcoyano may have been a mistake, after a furious reaction from the midfielder.

After missing the entire campaign so far with an ankle injury, Ceballos has returned to the bench in recent weeks and started there against Alcoyano. He was asked to warm up with 15 minutes left but only came in during the last four minutes.

While waiting for the sideline, Ceballos was captured as he expressed his frustration with Ancelotti and seemed to brush off his boss with a completely unimpressed hand gesture before finally getting on the pitch.

Asked about the incident, Ancelotti expressed his support for Ceballos and insisted he did not mind a player who was simply desperate to finally get back on the pitch.

“What happens to a player who wants to play, to return, happened,” said Ancelotti (via Marca). “I wanted to give him minutes, but as I told him it was not the most appropriate plan and he could have aggravated the injury.

“With five minutes left, I waited a little longer. I saw that he got angry and I told him that maybe he was right, I might have waited too long to put him in.

“Everything is fine because he knows I have a lot of confidence in him.”

Ancelotti has been impressed with Ceballos in training since his return and is keen to keep the midfielder for the rest of the season as Real aim for a number of trophies.

As for Ceballos, whose contract expires in 2023, he is believed to have no problems with Ancelotti and appreciates the extra worry over his injury. However, he is desperate to get back to the game again as he has hopes of joining the Spanish squad for the 2022 World Cup.
