Cesar Azpilicueta has been shy about his Chelsea future and reveals that “the moment will come” to discuss a new contract.
The skipper’s current Blues contract expires at the end of the season and both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid are interested in taking him on a free transfer.
Atleti may now need to step up their efforts to recruit the veteran as well, after Kieran Trippier’s move to Newcastle was confirmed on Friday morning.
Despite this, 90min understands that Chelsea remain convinced that Azpilicueta will stay at the club after the summer. But, as was reported last month, the ongoing uncertainty has been a source of concern in the locker room.
Azpilicueta’s latest interview will have done little to reassure his teammates as he refused to get involved in his future, while insisting that he remain focused on his football.
“As I always said, I feel I have the club’s trust and now I’m focused on every game,” he said.
“It’s very tough matches and I’m enjoying the moment. Eventually the moment will come, but I’m fully focused on hopefully getting as many trophies as we can and then we’ll see.
“I can say nothing more than that I am really committed and have a lot of things ahead of me in the coming months and hopefully we can have a very good season.”
Azpilicueta is not the only Chelsea defender with an uncertain future heading into the summer. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are both out of contract at the end of the season with the Blues in danger of a defensive crisis if breakthroughs in the talks cannot be achieved.
In better news, Thiago Silva recently joined the club and is extending his stay at Stamford Bridge until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.
