MLS expansion team Charlotte FC announced the signing of Croatian goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina from the Bulgarian side Ludogorets Razgrad. His contract is set for 2024 with an option for 2025.
The move is waiting to get a P-1 visa and ITC. The 29-year-old goalkeeper will occupy an international roster spot in the club’s inauguration list.
Kahlina will join Charlotte FC ahead of her debut season in Major League Soccer, which begins on February 26 against DC United.
“Kristijan is a well-rounded goalkeeper who fits into our game model. He makes good decisions when the ball is at his feet and compliments it with good air play and shooting stops, says sports director Zoran Krneta.
“He comes to us with experience of European competition and is excited about the challenge of playing in Major League Soccer.”
Before joining Charlotte, the Croatian started 10 league matches this season and was in the Champions League qualifiers and Europa League group stage.
In total, Kahlina made 36 appearances in all competitions, and recorded 13 zeros during her one and a half years with Ludogorets. He joined at the end of the 2020/21 season and started the club’s last five league matches to help the Ludogorets win their tenth straight Bulgarian title.
The Croatian was also part of HNK Gorica and worked as a starting goalkeeper for five years. Kahlina led them to promotion to the Croatian first division in their second year and was named captain from 2019. During 157 matches at Gorica, Kahlina kept a clean sheet at 53.
