Middlesbrough FC acquired midfielder Riley McGree from Major League Soccer expansion team Charlotte FC, the clubs announced on Friday.
McGree stands as Charlotte’s second signing ever after signing a deal in October 2020, resigning before the MLS expansion side plays a game.
“We knew that Riley was being tracked by many clubs around Europe after his successful game in Birmingham, and we finally made an offer that was too good to turn down,” said sporting director Zoran Krneta in a press release.
“Selling a player for profit who has never played a match for your club is proof of our incredible scouting department that identified Riley as a player with a bright future.
“We will invest this transfer fee back into our inauguration list as we continue to build towards the beginning of 2022. Everyone at the club wishes Riley good luck in Middlesbrough and for the rest of his career.”

The 23-year-old Australian national team player spent the past year and a half on loan to Birmingham City and recorded 30 matches in the second division.
McGree is now joining Championship side Middlesbrough as they battle to reach the English Premier League. They are currently in seventh place in the table.
The player was previously linked with a move to Scottish Premiership powerhouse Celtic FC before moving to Middlesbrough.
Without McGree, Charlotte still has Jordy Alcivar, Alan Franco and Sergio Ruiz as key midfielders. They also added Ben Bender to the list after selecting the player as number 1 overall in last week’s 2022 Major League Soccer SuperDraft.
Riley McGree became the latest Major League Soccer player to move to Europe, after Orlando City striker Daryl Dike secured his move to Championship team West Bromwich Albion, FC Dallas agreed to a contract with FC Augsburg for Ricardo Pepi and Toronto FC sent Richie Laryea to Nottingham Forest.
