Chelsea are considering moving Lucas Digne

Chelsea are ready to make a move for Everton’s Lucas Digne after the news that Ben Chilwell will not play again until next season, understand 90min.

The European champions had been worried about Chilwell’s injury and talks were called last week about potential left-back reinforcements.

The former Leicester man suffered the injury last month, and at first it was hoped that two months’ rest would mean that no surgery was needed. Now, however, it has become clear that he must go under the knife.

Chilwell is likely to be out for up to nine months, and 90 minutes understand that Chelsea are ready to look at a signing in January.

They have considered internal options and one of them was to recall Dutch teenager Ian Maatsen from his loan spell at Championship Coventry City. The 19-year-old has had an excellent campaign, but his experience is limited.

Although Maatsen is an alternative, the Blues are also looking to see what opportunities there are elsewhere. An alternative is Everton’s forgotten left-handed ace Digne.

90min understands that Chelsea were considering moving after the Frenchman and had talks before recruiting Chilwell 2020.

Now the Blues are again on Dignes’ track as the player is looking to leave Everton in January after a quarrel with manager Rafa Benitez.

Benitez has told the club’s hierarchy that the player can leave less than a year after signing a new long-term contract.

In fact, Everton have already agreed on the terms of his replacement with Dynamo Kiev’s Vitaliy Mykolenko, who will sign a £ 17m deal in early January – paving the way for Dignes’ departure.

Chelsea see him as a perfect fit to Thomas Tuchel’s system of full-backs, but it remains to be seen how much Everton will require for the Frenchman.

90 min understand that the Blues would be willing to make a permanent deal for Digne, but they would like it to be strongly based on looks, as they would take his entire salary package from Everton’s hands.

The Toffees also realize that they would not want to be left with one of their highest paid players in the stands every week.

Through his representatives, Digne himself has made it clear to Everton that he would love the chance to move to Chelsea.
