Chelsea are still looking for Sevilla midfielder Jules Konde’s services and will continue a deal for the Frenchman ahead of a summer move, understand 90min.
The Blues thought they had agreed on a reduced price to sign Konde in August last year, only to be shocked when the Spanish club increased their demands at 11 o’clock. Chelsea refused to do business thereafter and the 23-year-old was forced to stay at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, despite having his heart set on the switch.
The emergence of academy product Trevoh Chalobah has filled the gap in head coach Thomas Tuchel’s squad since Kurt Zouma’s sale to West Ham. But Chelsea are still expected to go after a new midfielder with the future of Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and Cesar Azpilicueta uncertain as they enter the last six months of their respective contracts.
While other options such as Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Niklas Sule from Bayern Munich have been considered, 90min understands that Chelsea have come to the conclusion that Konde is still the outstanding candidate and there is a belief within the club that he will join sometime in 2022.
Sevilla’s demands mean a January move for the defender is highly unlikely, but West London are working to steal a march against any other potential suitors and agree on a transfer before the summer window opens – the same approach they can adopt with Monaco midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni.
Konde has a £ 68m release clause included in his contract in Andalusia, and triggering it could be an option if the Blues want to avoid negotiating with Sevilla after their problems last year.
Sources have told 90min that Konde – who idolizes current Chelsea player Thiago Silva – is unwavering in his desire to move to Stamford Bridge and he has repeated it to his current employers.
The French national team player has continued to impress this season and played an important role in keeping a clean sheet in eight goals in La Liga as part of a meager backline, with Sevilla facing the next challenge for Real Madrid’s leaders.
