Chelsea predicted the line-up against Zenit

Chelsea enter Wednesday’s meeting with Zenit with the knowledge that they must match Juventus’ result against Malmö to secure the top spot in the Champions League Group H.

The Blues are in a tricky form and have lots of damage problems to contend with, so this game is by no means as simple as it might be for Thomas Tuchel.

This is how the boss could line up.

Edouard Mendy (GK) – Has looked a bit shaky in recent weeks but is still Chelsea’s number one without a shadow of a doubt.

Cesar Azpilicueta (CB) – Benched before the West Ham match, Chelsea’s skippers may need to bring their experience for this.

Andreas Christensen (CB) – Thiago Silva does not deserve to be benched at all, but his legs will need to rest and this may be the best chance for Tuchel to do so for a while.

Antonio Rudiger (CB) – A constant force to the left. With Trevoh Chalobah still injured, this is a no-brainer.

Reece James (RM) – One of the best players in England last month, Chelsea need James to soon rediscover that form.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek (CM) – RLC has been struggling in recent weeks, but with Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic, he gets another chance to prove himself.

Saul Niguez (CM) – Speaking of another chance, Saul is slowly running out of time to convince Chelsea fans he deserves to stay. If he fails here, it may be over. Depending on Tuchel’s level of belief, this could easily be Mason Mount’s place.

Marcos Alonso (LM) – Alonso had a back problem against West Ham but is believed to have recovered. With Ben Chilwell out too, it’s big.

Callum Hudson-Odoi (RW) – One of Chelsea’s best players recently, but has surprisingly been benched in the last two games. Definitely need to return.

Kai Havertz (ST) – Havertz has trained after suffering an injury against West Ham and should lead the line here, especially with Romelu Lukaku who is not yet fit enough to start.

Timo Werner (LW) – Werner is close to full fitness and should have the chance to revive his impressive collaboration with Alonso from the first weeks of the season.
