Christian Makoun approaches trade from Inter Miami to Charlotte FC

3

Charlotte FC chases Inter Miami midfielder Christian Makoun, sources have confirmed to 90min.

Makoun – who can also play left-back – is the product of Zamora’s youth system in his native Venezuela, and made 32 appearances for the club before spending time on loan with Juventus U-23s 2018/19.

In August 2019, he became Inter Miami’s third signing after Matias Pellegrini and Julian Carranza. Since then, Makoun – who has captained Venezuela’s U-20 national team – has made 30 appearances for the Herons and scored two goals.

The majority of Makoun’s appearances for the Herons came in the 2021 campaign, collecting 2,023 minutes in the MLS.

Makoun was protected by Inter Miami during the MLS Expansion Draft recently, which means that Charlotte FC could not acquire him through that method. However, sources have told 90min that they are trying to take Makoun to North Carolina on a permanent basis via trade this winter.

Should that happen, the high-ranking Venezuelan will join Anton Walkes, Christian Fuchs and Joseph Mora in a talented CLTFC defensive line-up.

For Inter Miami, this would only be the latest in a series of moves as sports director Chris Henderson and head coach Phil Neville try to clear houses ahead of the 2022 campaign.

The Herons failed to reach the 2021 MLS Cup playoffs and have already been separated from the likes of Carranza, Lewis Morgan and Kelvin Leerdam, while Designated Player (DP) Rodolfo Pizarro has returned to Liga MX team Monterrey on loan.

DP colleague Blaise Matuidi was left unprotected in the Expansion Draft and is also expected to leave the club.
