Curtis Jones has been ruled out for a lengthy period due to a “freak” eye injury

Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones has been suspended for an extended period on the sidelines due to a freak eye injury.

The 20-year-old has been away since he got worse in an unintentional collision in training before the Red Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid earlier this month.

After missing the Premier League defeat at West Ham and international assignments with England’s U-21, Liverpool have confirmed that Jones is facing “a number of more weeks” in the treatment room.

Club doctor Jim Moxon told the club’s official website: “It’s a crazy injury and a lot of bad luck, but the important thing to emphasize is that there is no permanent injury and his vision will not be affected after the recovery period.

“But the nature of the issue means that caution is important; we must give it time to heal and we can not rush it, therefore it will not be a quick return.

“It needs to be fixed before we can reintroduce Curtis to full training, but there are things he can do in the meantime to keep fit.

“We can not put a specific time scale on a return after it will take a number of weeks from now because it heals naturally, so it is not one we will risk and patience is a virtue with this specific recovery.”

Speaking about Jones’ injury earlier in November, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said: “He [Curtis] had very bad luck in training – he got a finger that itched his eye.

“I had a lot of injuries to players in my career, it was not involved. He is on his way back but we have to see exactly how long.”

Jones joins forward Roberto Firmino as a long-term absentee in the treatment room at Anfield, while midfielder Joe Gomez is also hesitant as Liverpool prepare to face Arsenal in Saturday’s late kick-off.

As better news, Sadio Mane was in training on Wednesday after being substituted early in Senegal’s match against Togo on Thursday as a precautionary measure.
