Diego Chara extends contract with Portland Timbers until 2024

The Portland Timbers have extended their contract with the iconic midfielder and club captain Diego Chara.

Chara has played more regular season MLS games (310) and minutes (27,203) than anyone else in Timber’s history since joining as the club’s first designated player ever in 2011.

During that time, he has helped Portland win the MLS Cup 2015, reach two other finals (2018 and 2021) and win the MLS is Back Tournament 2020.

Even though he has turned 35, the Colombian shows little sign of slowing down. Last season alone, Chara put 717 pressure on opposing players – at least 227 more than any teammate – while finishing second among Portland players for recovery (218) and interceptions (55).

Chara – whose younger brother, Yimmi, also plays for the Timbers – has now put the pen to paper on a contract that will keep him at Providence Park until 2024.

“We are excited to extend Diego’s contract and look forward to many more years of his quality performances that we have become so accustomed to,” Timber general manager and football president Gavin Wilkinson said in a press release.

“The Timbers are incredibly fortunate to have Diego at this club and appreciate his tremendous contribution to this organization on and off the pitch. We would also like to thank his incredible wife and their family for the countless sacrifices they have made to support Diego and Portland. Timbers through the years. ”

Head coach Giovanni Savarese commented on the “immeasurable” effect Chara’s leadership has on his side.

“The role of Diego Chara in this team is immeasurable. He is our captain and leader, and we could not be more excited to have him with us for the next three years,” said Savarese. “We are incredibly grateful for his commitment and ongoing hard work for this team. “

With Chara’s future tied, the Timbers will continue to prepare for the launch of their 2022 campaign, starting at home to the 2021 Supporters’ Shield winner New England Revolution on 26 February.
