Donny van de Beek & Dean Henderson start for Man Utd vs Young Boys

Manchester United’s interim manager Ralf Rangnick has confirmed that Donny van de Beek and Dean Henderson will start against the Young Boys in the Champions League, while he has also confirmed two additions to his staff in the back room.

United have already qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League, due to a fantastic victory in Villarreal last time out.

This means that Rangnick can afford to rotate his players in United’s last group game, and the German revealed at his pre-match press conference that Van de Beek, who has been constantly overlooked in midfield, will get his chance, as will goalkeeper Henderson – who has seen David de Gea return to top form this season.

“Well to begin with, they will both play tomorrow, in the first XI,” Rangnick said when questioned about the two players. “Donny came in as sub on Sunday. Dean is a very ambitious ‘keeper, we need two.’

Rangnick also confirmed that the match would come too early for Edinson Cavani and Raphael Varane, who have tentatively returned to training after injury: “They both can not play tomorrow but they were part of the training today. Edi also yesterday, Rapha for the first time.

“Expect them both to be in full training next week. Both top players. It’s also about sustainability. It would be great to have them as soon as possible, but of course for the rest of the season.”

From a staff perspective, 63-year-old Rangnick also confirmed that he will bring in Chris Armas as an assistant coach – someone he works closely with during his time in the Red Bull group – as well as a sports researcher.

“There will not be that many. Very happy to work with staff I met last week, they gave me a lot of help,” Rangnick said when asked how many people he would bring into the club.

“We have decided to bring in sports scientists with Sasha Lense, he will be introduced as soon as he has a visa and work permit. I will also have another assistant coach with Chris Armas.”
