Newcastle have reached an agreement in principle with former Bournemouth coach Eddie Howe who is expected to see him take over at St. Johnstone. James’ Park.
Newcastle have been looking for a permanent successor to Steve Bruce in recent weeks, with Graeme Jones temporarily taking control of the team in the meantime.
The Magpies had been keen on former Arsenal boss Unai Emery, who has since had success in Spain with Villarreal. But the Spaniard publicly ruled out on Wednesday.
Howe was on the club’s original shortlist of potential candidates and 90min understands that the talks on Thursday went well, with Newcastle making a verbal offer to become the next permanent manager. He has “in principle” agreed on a two and a half year contract until 2024.
Howe made his name in the lead for two seasons at Bournemouth, first appointed when he was just 31. After returning to the club after a brief stint at Burnley, he later guided the Cherries into the Premier League and kept them in top flight during four seasons.
Still only 43, Newcastle will be his first job since leaving Bournemouth almost 18 months ago. He is also expected to bring his own staff to the North East, including longtime assistant Jason Tindall, who is currently on the staff at Sheffield United.
Newcastle are still looking for their first Premier League win of the season, they lost heavily against Chelsea in their last match, and end up in 19th place in the table as a result.
With heavy investments in the transfer market expected after the PIF takeover last month, 90min understands that there will be two transfer wish lists for the next two windows. The focus in January will be more on recruiting players to ensure the club stays in the Premier League, with the summer more on long-term goals that may be harder to attract in the middle of the season.
