Edouard Mendy tests positive for Covid-19 and will miss Senegal’s AFCON opener

Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy has tested positive for Covid-19 on the eve of Senegal’s start of the Africa Cup of Nations with Zimbabwe.

The Lions of Teranga start their AFCON campaign on Monday but will be without their star goalkeeper.

Mendy will be the latest Senegal player to test positive for the coronavirus after captain Kalidou Koulibaly and striker Famara Diedhiou both gave positive results in recent days.

Senegal traveled to their tournament base in Cameroon without six other players – Saliou Ciss, Mame Baba Thiam, Bamba Dieng, Pape Matar Sarr, Namplays Mendy and Alfred Gomis – after all testing positive for Covid-19.

Ismaila Sarr and Abdoulaye Seck have also not yet joined the squad as they are still working to overcome injuries, leaving Senegal with a severely depleted squad ahead of the tournament opener.

Sadio Mane, Cheikhou Kouyate and Balde Keita are among the remaining star names who are keen and eager to go towards Zimbabwe.

It has been reported in recent days that sides of AFCON may be forced to play with outside players in goal if needed to meet matches in the tournament.

Mendy’s positive test comes a few days after Thomas Tuchel revealed that Chelsea’s teammates N’Golo Kante and Thiago Silva are suffering from Covid-19, and missed the Blues Carabao Cup semi-final victory at home against rivals Tottenham.

The duo can return to the page for the second stage next Wednesday.
