FC Dallas approaches FC Utrecht’s goalkeeper Maarten Paes

FC Dallas is approaching the signing of FC Utrecht’s goalkeeper Maarten Paes, sources have said to 90min.

The Texas club has been in the market for a permanent alternative to staffing the posts after Jimmy Maurer was replaced by Brazilian loanee Phelipe Megiolaro last season. The latter has since returned to Gremio in his home country.

Dallas has already taken in the Spanish stopper Cristian Rivero from the La Liga team Valencia on an 18-month loan with a call option, but it seems as if their goalie search is not finished yet.

90 minutes get to know that Paes will be the next goalkeeper to join the club, in the same way he will be on loan with an opportunity to make the move permanent. The deal is not over yet, but sources say it is well on its way.

The 23-year-old is clearly a talent with nine international caps for the Netherlands under his belt at various youth levels. Since joining Utrecht in 2018, Paes has made 48 senior appearances for the club and kept a clean sheet at 12.

Although he has made some mistakes in recent times, Paes has been one of the strongest goalkeepers in the Eredivisie this season, averaging 2.53 saves per 90 minutes and keeping five zeros in 17 games.

Pae’s arrival would mark the next step in a hectic off-season for FC Dallas, which in addition to recruiting Rivero also completed the record-breaking sale of USMNT striker Ricardo Pepi to Augsburg. The Portuguese right-back Nanu has also arrived at Frisco on loan.

FC Dallas begins its ML22 2022 campaign at home against Toronto FC on February 26.
