Gareth Southgate suggests that the new England contract is close

Gareth Southgate has hinted that he is close to extending his contract as England coach, acknowledging that the lack of opportunities at club level and the wealth of talent in the current squad would make it difficult to leave.

Southgate’s current contract – worth £ 3 million a year – will expire after the 2022 World Cup, but it was revealed on Friday that the 51-year-old is about to sign a two-year extension.

His new contract would mean that he stays as three lion bosses until the climax of the European Championships 2024 and almost doubles his money.

Speaking ahead of England’s final World Cup qualifier against San Marino on Monday night, Southgate took up his future.

“As a manager, you want to work with good players,” he said. “You can challenge them in another way.

“There are not a large number of jobs out there and being manager of England is a huge privilege, so of course I take that responsibility for granted. It means a lot to me to be in the position I am.”

England need just one point from their clash with low-key San Marino to secure their place at the 2022 World Cup – potentially Southgate’s third major tournament responsible for the three lions after memorable rides to the semi-finals of the 2018 edition and final of the 2020 European Championships in the summer.

Southgate continued: “We have shown in recent years that we have a really good strength in depth. I think there is still a long way to go and room for improvement.

“There are depths, but we have always had depths in this country. We have always had good players. I am not convinced that our players are better than the team in 2004 or 2006 and that kind of period. I am It is not certain that we’re better than 96 or 98 when I played.

“But this group has a lot of potential and has really mixed well as a team. They have formed a very strong bond and the way they have worked for each other has given some really good performances and exceptional results.”
