West Ham were denied a fourth straight Europa League victory by a late own goal from Tomas Soucek, after previously coming from behind against a stubborn team from Genk in Belgium.
Said Benrahma looked like he was going to be the hero of the evening and scored both West Ham goals in the second half, before the late Genk equalizer ensured that the points were shared.
The Hammers had not even conceded in their first three games of the competition. But they were caught asleep in the early stages of the game when Genk forward Joseph Paintsil drove over Issa Diop and shot past Alphonse Areola, who got a decent hand on the shot.
David Moye’s side, which had been subject to some rotation, was not at its best in the first half. There were flashes of what they are capable of here and there, but something was missing.
Michail Antonio saw the best of the chances in the first half, with his effort towards the end of the initial 45 minutes only partially saved and then desperately cleared by the line as it slowly seeped in the direction of the net.
Whatever was said in the locker room during the break, it was better after the break.
Eventually, Moyes made a triple change and put Jarrod Bowen, Pablo Fornals and Soucek into the game just before the hour. Within seconds, Benrahma had restored them on equal terms and swept home a low post from Vladimir Coufal on the right.
Since then, everything was West Ham and they were well worth their second goal to take the lead. Benrahma, who was his team’s most obvious threat all night, danced through Genk’s defender on the left side of the penalty area and shot low at the nearest post.
In the last moments of the match, however, Genk withdrew a happy goal, with the permission of Soucek – who nodded into his own net.
It looked like Hammers would win, only for Soucek to inadvertently divert the ball into his own net in the final stages when he tried to cut out with his head. It was a late rally to try to come back, but 2-2 was how it ended.

Alphonse Areola (GK) – 6/10 – Will know he should have done better with Genk’s opener. But he made good saves after that.
Vladimir Coufal (RB) – 7/10 – The Hammers looked better when he went to support the attack
Issa Diop (CB) – 5/10 – Caught sleeping when Paintsil ran over him to make the opening goal.
Craig Dawson (CB) – 6/10 – Good in the air in both boxes.
Aaron Cresswell (LB) – 6/10 – Had some good raids going forward, especially at the beginning of the second half.

Declan Rice (CM) – 6/10 – Managed himself and the game well considering he took a warning in the first half.
Mark Noble (CM) – 6/10 – Barely gave away the ball, even though the team had more of them in the offensive sense after he went off.
Said Benrahma (RM) – 8/10 – Looked like the most likely West Ham player to unlock Genk’s defense. It was fitting that he got the equalizer, while his second was a sublime solo effort.
Manuel Lanzini (AM) – 6/10 – Constituted occasional threats but will perhaps be disappointed that he did not make more of this chance.
Arthur Masuaku (LM) – 5/10 – Not enough of a blow and hooked on for an hour.

Michail Antonio (ST) – 6/10 – Threatens with the ball at the feet running forward. Went very close in the end of the first half, but probably lacked clinical quality overall.
Tomas Soucek (CM) – 6/10 – Made West Ham better when he came in but stayed and destroyed a crazy own goal when he tried to cut out a post.
Jarrod Bowen (ST) – 6/10 – Effectively took up a “false nine” role.
Pablo Fornals (LM) – 5/10 – Undoubtedly made less of an impression than Lanzini.
Alex Kral (CM) – N / A – Late arrival from the bench.
