Gerard Pique reveals his pay slip after “false” claims about his salary

Barcelona and Gerard Pique have retaliated against allegations in the Spanish media about the high salaries of a handful of senior players in the squad.

The Catalan giants are known for being in a tricky financial situation, with high player salaries and loss of income during the Covid-19 lock-in, which contributes to increasing debts that continue to take out their rights to this day.

To exacerbate the misery, Lluis Canut continued on Onze to “reveal” the highest earners in the squad, claiming that Pique takes home 28 million euros per season as the one who earns the most at Camp Nou, closely followed by Sergio Busquets (23 million euros) and Jordi Alba (EUR 20 million).

Apparently, Pique was not impressed by these claims and he took to Twitter to reveal the latest payment of 50% of his salary – cool 2.3 million euros.

“People like this to charge for public television to defend their friends,” he wrote. “Here is 50% of my payroll, earned on December 30. Have some respect.”

Barcelona were also equally frustrated by the whole thing and published a lengthy statement on their official website.

“In any case, the information about the salaries of some first-team players has not been provided by the club and its origin is unknown,” the statement began.

“In any case, the amounts referred to in the information are incorrect, do not correspond to reality and, moreover, for the first three players, give it as fixed amounts which, because they are variable, may never be achieved.

“It is false that the previously mentioned players have only postponed 100% of their salary. Messrs. Pique, Busquets and Alba gave up part of their salary when they signed the latest contract renewal last summer.

“We consider it inappropriate, unprofessional and in bad faith when this information is offered as true and truthful and we regret that data of this type is provided which affects players’ personal rights and which, when true, deserves the highest level of confidentiality.”
